One thing I never did but always wanted to was to run a marathon. The young lady in the picture just behind me got me to keep my word to run a marathon with her – a promise I had made some three years earlier when I saw her on a Sunday afternoon in Cincinnati. Earlier that day she had just completed the "Flying Pig" marathon. When I saw Mary Ann Miller on the Feast of Trumpets in September 2006 in Venlo, the Netherlands, she reminded me of my promise. So in November 2006 I started running again. After a ten year layoff getting started was a bit tough – I could not run for more than about ten minutes at a time. But I kept on going and in April of this year Mary Ann, her friend and soon-to-be fiance Matthew Bates and I ran the Bonn marathon. Like Forrest Gump I decided to keep running for a while. So I ran a half-marathon in Cologne last month. One year later and about 15 pounds lighter, those 1,000 miles make a big difference. On December 9 I will run a half-marathon in Dallas with Monica and our son Ted. I am somewhat proud that son Ted has started running.

This time last year I started running again.
