"Rest in the Lord" (Part 1 of 2 parts) |
Some 15 years ago a book was published by a well-known German journalist with the title "Der Ehrliche ist der Dumme" ("He who is honest is the stupid one").
In his book the author showed how in today’s society those people seem to get ahead or do best who break the rules. By contrast, the honest person who always pays his taxes, obeys the rules, etc., seems to be at a disadvantage.
The theme of that book reminds us of King David’s encouragement that we find in Psalm 37. Sometimes we, too, as Christians might be tempted to think that the bad guys are getting ahead in life while we are left behind.
"Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him," David tells us. "Do not fret because of him who prospers in his way, because of the man who brings wicked schemes to pass. Cease from anger, and forsake wrath; do not fret – it only causes harm . . . For yet a little while and the wicked shall be no more; indeed, you will look diligently for his place, but it shall be no more. But the meek shall inherit the earth" (Psalm 37:4-11).
Yes, God’s millstone turns slowly, as a German proverb says. Sometimes we might be discouraged because the new world we hope for seems to take so long in coming. At times like that King David tells us to "rest in the Lord" – to wait patiently when we are frustrated by things in this world that we cannot change ourselves.
It is at those times that we are motivated to pray more fervently "Thy kingdom come!"
With these thoughts I wish us all a rewarding Sabbath!
