In good company

Do you sometimes ask yourself why your example doesn't the people who know you to praise God? Jesus tells us, His disciples, that we are the light of the world (Matthew 5:14). He expects us to let our "light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven" (verse 16).

If we don't see those around us praising God, we might think we are being a light. But if that conclusion is allowable in our case, then it would also apply to Jesus Himself.

When Jesus preached in the synagogue in Nazareth, his boyhood town, his neighbors seemed to have reacted with the attitude: "Who does he think he is, anyway?" (see Mathew 13:53-58).

Those closest to Him did not believe on Him. Their reaction on one occasion reveals a lot. A large group had gathered around Jesus. They were so many of them in such a small space that they could not even eat. "When His own people heard about this, they went out to lay hold of Him, for they said, He is out of His mind" (Mark 3:21).

Six months before His death Jesus kept His last Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem. At this late date His own brothers still did not believe on Him (John 7:5).

When will the people praise God who experienced Jesus 2000 years ago and did not believe on Him? When will the people praise God who know us today and do not understand our way of life? "In the day of visitation", i. e. on the day when our heavenly Father will open their eyes to the Truth (1 Peter 2:12; John 6:44).

We should seek to do what Jesus tells us to do and be a light to the people around us. If they don't see the light for what is is yet, let's not be disappointed. After all, in this regard we are in good company with Jesus.

With these thoughts I wish everyone a rewarding Sabbath!
