Monica is already harvesting produce from her raised bed garden.
Three years ago Monica started gardening in earnest in Mobile. She started with 3 small raised bed garden plots and has now expanded to include a large plot on the other side of the road leading to the house. With her sister now living in Mobile, the two of them work on the garden together. Late last year they planted potatoes, carrots and broccoli and then spent the afternoons before sunset on cold days covering the beds with blankets and then uncovering them in the morning sun. They have been harvesting lettuce for 2 weeks now, along with broccoli, and today was the first day to bring in some potatoes and "meaningful" carrots. Made for a nice lunch! The late spring and summer plots are to produce cucumbers, tomatoes, string beans, field peas, watermelon and pumpkin. This experiment has turned out to be quite fruitful! There are also blueberry bushes and fig trees that produce abundant amounts of fruit.
